(Not) from the mouths of babes

(Dateline: Last Week / Location: Granite Glen)

'Salina had hurt her foot - you know the bit of the foot that is really tender, on the top up towards the "bunion ring" (her word for the sticky out bit of the ankle since forever) and was trying desparately hard not to cry too loudly.

"Don't you hate it when that happens," I said to her. "That is the bit where it hurts so much you almost feel like swearing. Should we make up a suitable swear word?"

Dash broke in. "Auntie Jeanie," he said, "sometimes when I am hurt like that, I use REAL swear words inside my head."

'Salina agreed that she too has a habit of internalised swearing.

When I recounted this to Bush Babe she replied "and sometimes they don't stay inside his head."

He looks so innocent.

Heh. Mr I said he has never heard Dash swear (probably isn't game!) but he does use "Damn" quite a bit (before looking furtively around to see who noticed).
:-)

PS WV is 'gunworm' - a good pretend swearword?

I remember once, when Dylan was a maybe ten, and we were in the midst of 'our hard time', he was having a good cry about things and blurted, "Oh, sometimes I just wish that I could swear. I just want to swear so bad." So I said, "Well, then go ahead." He said, "You would not be mad?" I said, "Well, sometimes people swear. You have to think about where you're swearing at. If you swear in school, you'll get punished for it, and I won't try to get you out of it. And if you swear and other parents hear you, well, they'll think that you're not a very nice boy and they will not let their children play with you. But if you really think that saying a swear word will make you feel better, than I think that you should be able to say that word. I'm a big girl. I can take it." I do have to say, once I gave them permission to swear, there was surprisingly little of it.

LOL.

When the boys were little and I caught someone rolling one around in his mouth, I told him in a very serious fashion that those were "grown up words" and that they could use them when they turned eighteen, that if I caught them using them before then I would wash their mouths out with soap. Strangely, none of them have questioned this bit of wisdom. However, I also pointed out (as Debby did) that the kind of kids they were going to want to spend their time with would not be comfortable with that language and neither would their parents. If they are using them, then they have the good sense not to do it when I'm around.

Nice approach Debby, I think I might try that with Max when he gets to that age.

YEs, one would never know the sweet, precious, adorable Dash, of all innocence looking babes would not only think those swear words but actually vocalize them . . .

I wish I could remember some of the "made-up" swear words I've heard either from my children or theirs. I crack up when I hear them! Hope Salina's foot feels much better now, or soon!

"... and sometimes they don't stay inside his head." .. Priceless!

I confess I've gone the 'you can't swear till you are mature enough to know what company it's appropriate in, and what's not' route. It works.. sort of...
