The town mouse in the country house...

Oh this country girl has become a bit citified, it seems.

When you go to the property, the unwritten rule is that you leave your keys in your car. That way, if it is required to be moved, anyone can do so.

I grew up with that rule and respect it to the extent of remembering to return my keys that I automatically palm on leaving the drivers seat.

My daughter is a city girl who loves to visit the country. But she has a different rule ingrained - always. lock. the. car. on. leaving.

Now, I am adamant that I have told her there was a exception to the rule once you hit the dirt, she is adamant that she understands this exception and did not do so - BUT she was the last to go to the car to get her purse out - so it was either her or Mr Nobody (who does have quite a record here on the property, if I remember my own childhood rightly) (or indeed the animals have not only learned how to hold the handle up but got over that whole opposible thumb thing) but...

You can see where this is going, right?

Indeed - the bad news is, there is no local RACQ to come and rescue the damsel, and in this day and age of cars being built to keep the people breaking into cars out of cars I am not as quick to reach for the wire coathanger as I once was.

The good news is, it only takes a few phone calls, the organising of my sister's brother-in-law's wife to rendezvous with V in a tyre store 200km away and then somehow get another hook up between my sister's brother-in-law's wife and my mother about 50km away for the spare key to get to me before I head back.

Easy, eh?

OH yeah, easy as pie.

You know what? This is exactly thing kind of thing I would do, only I would do it twice.

I hope those spare keys enjoy the journey!

And I hope you learned that, you have taught 'Salina well and that nine year olds may be on auto-pilot (like the rest of us) and then exceptions just fly right out the window :-)

I am still stuck on "mouse"... for many reasons, not the least of which is that "quiet as..." are not the first descriptive word for you that springs to mind!

It'll be fine... plenty of utes to grab in case of emergency. Just hope you got all the food scraps out before the lock-out. Hmmmm....

Once we went to the fair. I had a set of keys for the car. Tim had a set of keys for the car. We were walking back to have a lunch break. Two hungry boys came rushing back for the keys. Tim gave them his set. By the time I got to the car, the girls were clamoring to sit down...so I handed them my keys. We ate, had a small break and then headed back to the car after carefully locking up. Tim asked for his keys. I asked for mine. All 5 kids looked at each other wide eyed. You guessed it. His keys were by the 'esky' and mine were on the back seat. *sigh*

Expensive lessons. Bet your bippy it did not ever happen again.

We lock in Chicago, and I live in dread of locking myself out of the car, am forever patting myself down to find the keys.

Easy to do, a "locked out of the car" situation - thank goodness for the RACQ! I hope your various rendezvous succeeded!

I should have said "thank goodness for me having access to RACQ"!

An update to all you fine folk...

Apparently Mr Nobody (aka 'Salina) had help (aka Violet) in the locking (or not) of the doors of the car.

V got the keys to the tyre shop, the tyre shop got the keys to my sister's brother-in-law's wife, my sister's brother-in-law's wife got the keys to my mother - only one leg left of the journey!!

Apparently RACQ will make the trip out here to start an engine - who knew?

Jay - are there many things you would do twice? lol you are a card, girl!

M+B thanks for the positive spin I was missing there.

BB - very meek and mild, just looking and sounding larger because I am in front of you at the moment. oh, and thanks for the reminder about your mouse plague - maybe we could have trained one of them to unlock...

Deb - thank you for the beautiful one-up there - it makes me feel better.

I will keep that in mind, RhubarbWhine. Next time (in case the my sister's brother-in-law's wife isn't handy)

BM2 & Jayne - not a nightmare once its sorted. And there were alternatives - we could have taken a work ute home for Christmas. Plenty of vehicles and solutions.

therapydoc - in town I am always double-checking the keys before locking - and the habit of locking WITH the keys is a good one. Leaving your car unlocked and keys in in Chicago would not be a good idea.

megz_mum - its not until you don't have a service that you appreciate it most.

Ouch! Time to leave a spare key hidden at the property? I'm glad you were able to get hold of one, even if it did have to take the scenic route!
