Ah,I have over 300 days to go, so I can learn from this!

For me, if there's more than 3 people coming, there's only one kind of dinner party: Indian banquet!

You can make the curries in advance (1 red meat, 1 chicken and 1 vege if you're brave) and have lots of little side dishes that take no time at all to make. Only Indian bread I'm no good at making unfortunately. Guests can just serve themselves when they feel like it.

Or even simpler: chilli con carne? Served with tortillas, guacamole and sour cream.

Hmmm, makes me feel like cooking!

(Word verification is 'norant'. Don't tell ME what not to do! lol)

My 40th is in August. I'm trying to talk Charming into taking me to Peru, and climbing Macchu Pichu. I think one should do something grand on birthday's that end in Zero.

But we will probably have all our friends over here for a Mexican fiesta.

Anything, so long as you don't have to cook :)

What about one of those murder mystery packs. I assume you can still buy them. We did one a few years back now and it was SO much fun!

There's about 25 more days to mine! EEEEEKKKKKKK!!!! I posted the invites today.

Run of the mill party - nibbles and beverages. Come as your favourite 80s Celebrity.

If you happen to be in Perth, you're invited :-)

You know what I reckon, little sis! Worked well for moi... get everyone to bring a pre-made ingredient for your own favourite dishes... mix well, and voila! A dinner party where EVERYONE cooks! (This'll jog your memory!)

30? Maybe diapers and bottles, burp cloths and bonnets. 30? Yer just a baby.

Oh, wait, was that 40? OK. Canes, and bowler hats, mustaches and walkers. D'oh!

I like the food ideas. I was first thinking Mexican fiesta foods. (I LOVE Mexican food themes.) Or I love the Indian curry idea, didn't think of that on my own. Or--sorta like someone else mentioned, BB was it? Have everyone bring an ingredient for a fav dish/es. Or--how about have everyone bring a couple of their fav Chinese take-out items. I LOVE good Chinese!

100 days and counting huh? May the weather be great, your family be well, and may you have a joyous celebration however you choose to play/celebrate this momentous occasion!

I think everyone should bring you 40 somethings - be it raisins, dollars, bottles of wine.

The most original gift giver gets to make dinner because they think up good things.

If it is warm enough, have a cookout on the beach (paella?) and dance far into the night under the stars. There should be lots of wine and laughter and friends and family.

Thank you for the excellent ideas and suggestions - I may digest them a bit and then come back to the panel to get further advice.

Mini pavs, topped with whipped cream, shaved chocolate and tonnes of berries.
Dunno what your guests would be eating.... :P

I am trying to help my sister organise hers. We are thinking of going to a winery and doing the wine tasting thing.

For the dinner party or for getting older? :)

I'm always partial to a great bbq myself.

I agree with anyone who says that as long as you don't have to cook its all good!! Spend the day doing something special and then have a pot luck dinner so you get to provide nothing and just be the guest of honour.
