Two oh-my Too To!

So yes, obligatory "Happy New Year" from me.  Or quarterly greetings if you don't believe in new years - or indeed happy.

We are certainly living in interesting times.  While watching the news tonight, I realised that there are a lot of people panicking - which is a pretty fair assessment.

It seems the policy of "she's all right", "put your mind to it" and "it won't affect me" may not be the right fit for the current climate.

What a pity we didn't have two years of lived experience and data from the rest of the world to work with and actually prepare for when we dived into the pool.

D'oh.

When you can't find them for looking...

Lost.

My husband has lost a pair of glasses of late.

I often wonder what its like, being able to lose a pair of glasses.

As one whose vision is not only enhanced but made sense of with the occultation of some mighty weird lenses, this blithe disregard of the whereabouts of such an essential piece of equipment is - well, as fuzzy a concept as my eyesight should that misfortune ever come to me.

He thinks it might have happened on the weekend.  No, the one before - it was after that Friday anyway.

Just before "this bloddy thing" hit back in March, my deteriorating ability to read combined with separate pairs of not-quite ideal glasses was upgraded - at a premium - to one pair of multi-faceted light-sensitivity-tinted you-beaut glasses.

My eyesight does not come into that category that fits neatly into any sort of specials that Optometrists and health funds delight in - used to delight in.  It is the sort that requires ADDITIONAL cost to ensure that it doesn't end up so heavy it will fall off your face.

Apparently.

I had a run in with the poor girl who was my first attempt at making a transaction.

I have a type at Optometrist Dispensers.  Well, I would like to have a type.  The type I would like is one that would tell me exactly which one would suit me at the most inexpensive price and this is how the ordering process should occur - as opposed to the type that is actually attracted to me - the boss you about, take you for a fool, employ industry slang and jargon to bamboozle and then jump you with the bill.

I am sure that the poor young thing was just as jangled as I given the circumstances of the almost hushed atmosphere of mid-March pre-covid.

(Ah, remember then?  Hand sanitizers and food shortages and gob-smacked at Italy, France, the UK and Spain,)

She made one move - said one thing, the wrong thing, the wrong way and I was a jangling ball of anxiety about the impending requirement of being grown up enough to navigate Health Funds, Diarising, Budgeting, Fashion and Fast Lunch-Breaks.  Like a young horse I bolted and cowarded out with an "Can I take a Quote Away and Think About It?".

I have parked in a different spot at the shopping centre since then.  I don't like to walk past in case she might pounce.

He thinks that he may have left them in a shop.  Don't know which shop or why.  On a shelf somewhere.  Imagine being able to navigate life without them.

But I don't want the operation.  I have no problem with other people doing what they like with their eyes, but there are moments when I don't mind being unfocused.

That and I don't want someone sticking a knife into my eye.

Every time I see a pair of his glasses lying around the house, I tell him.  I say "oh, honey, I saw a pair of your glasses on the bench/in the bathroom/in Paris' room/downstairs" and he says "which ones?"

He's so funny.  As if I could tell them apart.  They all look like men's glasses to me.  His eyesight is such that Optometrists not only offer him deals, they GIVE HIM glasses with no gap!

Me, the pair before the last lot, I got hoodwinked by a modern edgy Optical Dispenser who managed to give me a quote for nearly a grand for two pairs because I had been lulled by the possibility of sunglasses (imagine, sunglasses - I have NEVER had a pair of sunglasses that I could see clearly through without contacts, and they are a pain in the butt - well the eyeball, but whatever) before she got to the "oh, we don't do that deal for your prescription, you need to pay an ADDITIONAL cost to ensure that it doesn't end up so heavy it will fall off your face."  Like a very grey mare I shied and cowarded out with an "Can I take it Away and Think About It?".

"Oh, thats the pair that I keep for the garden" he tells me when I find yet another pair in another spot.  Or maybe they are the same pair that he just keeps rehiding on me to send me crazy.

The pair before that, the older, respectable matronly Optical Dispenser not only talked me down from the fact that the glasses were giving me instant migraines whenever I wore them, she made me endure another week of hell because she thought it was because I wasn't wearing them enough and I should just battle through before calling in the learned one.

The next week she allowed me into the inner sanctum.  "Oh" the Optometrist said - giggle - "we've put the prism in upside-down.  These would have been of no help whatsoever - leave them with me for a few days." as he ushered me out the door.

But she was in wait for my leaving, because she bamboozled me with being grown up and navigate Health Funds, Diarising, Budgeting, Fashion and a Lunch-Break to be terminated with a return to the world's worst workplace.

She tricked me by offering the possibility of sunglasses and had led me well down the path and turned with the  "oh, we don't do that deal for your prescription, you need to pay an ADDITIONAL cost to ensure that it doesn't end up so heavy it will fall off your face."  Like a startled foal I started and got the guts to "Cancel what the Witch Suggested" (aided by the dire state of our finances a the time - my embarrassment has made me pay for far more stupid things in the past).

"No," he said, when I held aloft a pair found secreted on a cluttered horizontal space "those ones only have one eye."

I wonder if there are many pairs of one-eyed glasses hidden around the world in the houses of those who only require a half-view?

Anyhoo...  do you get Optometrist Anxiety too?

I always feel like I am going to fail the test that I have been called in to sit for.

They ask such dumb questions.

Bath R-ant

So I was having a bath.

(no, not for the last 4 1/2 months - although there be former flatmates who may attest that I have attempted such in the past - I was doing other things, like trying to remember to put all of my passwords in a safe place so I wouldn't have to do the whole find myself online again malarky I go through every quarter or so to update my blog)

As I was saing, I was having a bath.  I do like a bath.  I like a long bath, a warm bath - a bath you can relax and read in.

The book wasn't that crash hot, but Paris was in bed (hooray) asleep (miracles) and I didn't have any work needing my attention that evening (hallelujah).

I was teetering on that precipice of deciding whether the book was worthy of persevering with or not.  I am old enough and have wasted enough time on reading to be fairly ruthless regarding what is worthy or not - it doesn't just rely on literary merit (heck, I don't mind a bit of trash in my voracious diet) but also on whether I actually can be bothered with the main character - and she was getting on my nerves in the first 15 (crucial) pages.

However, as I said, water warm, no humans in need of me - teetering.

When I was pushed - by an ant.

I know!  Me too!  What was an ant doing in my bathroom - let alone bathtub!!

Apparently, finding my neck rather tender...

I grabbed him (or her, really, isn't it?  We actually had an Attenborough thing on ants today, and they're all girls) - so, I grabbed her and she was HUGE!!!

Well, probably not that big, but big enough to shriek at and fling - into the water beside my knee.

Double eek - I didn't want to condemn her to death - just because my neck had got in her way doing whatever she was doing in my bathroom - and so I tried to sort of swish her to the side.

Funny thing about physics and waves and water - that which swishes, swishes back, and so the more swish I applied, the more back towards my knee she came.

I then tried to push a wave towards the end of the bath, and at first it seemed to work - she went past the knee and calf area, and was almost at ankle-entry point when the swish-back interfered again with my cunning plan.

Not only did she swish back, she swished back quicker and on the crest of a wave, it appeared!

When she was back to almost knee level, I dropped the whole "don't want to condemn her to death" stance for the more selfish "don't want her taking me down" viewpoint.

I threw down the book and grabbed the washer - and in the ensuing mayhem, LOST SIGHT OF THE ANT completely.

She wasn't in the water...

She didn't appear to be on the washer (although my eyesight is dodgy at the best of times)...

Dear god, I hoped that she wasn't on my body hiding out somewhere?

I frantically washed and emptied the bathtub, calling for V - who failed to respond (probably because it was yelled at a very low level, so as not to stir Paris - and probably because I yelled it at normal Jeanie-range, which is not always at normal V-hearing range).

I eventually dressed with dread, fearing that every fibre on the surface of my body would ping to the presence of the ant at any minute.

I think I may be showering for the next few months...

Anyway, that's my excuse - what's yours?

This program is not captioned

I don't know what it is like to be my age for anybody else - but let me assure you, when one has a child - or children - or a partner - or a nagging pet - you have certain responses to stimuli that affect your whole life.
So, for example, you have one of those kids - or mobs - or scolds - or moggies - that can get a squeal or moan or rumble on that requires you to turn down your listening ability.

While this reaction certainly has its advantages, the ability to switch off active listening and just let the hum of family life does actually impact on other parts of your life.  Apparently.

You have to try harder - or appear to try harder - to be connecting with those other people - or animals - when such a noise is not happening.

And this, folks, is when I recently came to a startling realisation.

Its not deliberate.

Apparently, it wasn't that I had magicked the annoying noise away.  It is that the noise had been magicked away by the aging process, and the register that I didn't want and had been trying to ignore - had given up the ghost.

No matter how much I concentrated, those young people around were mumbling more and failing to make any sense whatsoever (this may actually be due to more than poor parenting and lollies after each effort on the sports field).

In this instance, it might actually be your - well, my - fault.

My body is failing me - while, in my household, it is enabling me.

Technology enables me also, and the television - what little of it that we watch these days - has a handy dandy feature where you can sub-title every day television.

Yay for digital!!!

Anyhow, some badly programmed computer or underpaid asian bilinguist breaks through the communication barrier to the middle-aged, over-tired, deafening matron on this side of the screen, and unlocks the secrets of what is meant to be being said with the visual clues.

Sometimes it is minutes behind and completely incomprehensible - I have seen news bulletins where a football story talks about "afraid rupert did come cushions free salting inns twitches..." where the presented clearly said "an affray. Reportedly concussion resulting in stiches..."

Other times it is beautiful poetry, saving us from crap reception and even translating what we the pixels are meant to be, with the advice that chirping crickets and thematic music was in our mind's eye.

However, I am disappointed that many marketers have failed to realise the potential of this little device, and do not even do a basic translation for the hearing impaired.

Indeed, they could play it even smarter than that, and really pinpoint a conversation with the viewing audience by using this technology.

While saying what a marvellous lifestyle of misogyny was on offer with a certain brand of beer during the football, the caption could actually be "yeah, laugh and clench now, love, because if the hubby thought FOR ONE MOMENT that your sweetheart would be one of these louts, it would be no action for a week and spaghetti every night of the week because he so much as smirked at something that you know to be base boorish behaviour, but you are onto that - give him a beer and toss your head, say "hmmph, satire" and pretend you get it on a whole different level - it will keep him perpetually off guard."

Bam.  Directly through to she who controls the beer budget.

Or you could be a really smart operator, and sell the caption rights for your ads through to another company - cross-promotion if you will - the censors will never see it, as they don't need captions and use the ad breaks to microwave pizzas - and so while you are selling something wholly worthwhile to parents - say lawnmowers or fence colours - you could do much for literacy levels in the children of today with a "hey, children of Australia, if you really want that lolly, how about telling your parents that you can work out the percentage difference in a sale price, because Shockolotof Sugarbars will be 50% off all this week - that is HALF PRICE - which is only three dollars and seventy-five cents.  Your parents will be so astonished at your mad maths skills, they will cave so easy"

Of course, it would need to be a really long ad to fit all of that it, because kids reading levels these days is abysmal.

Town Clothes

Do you remember town clothes?

Did you have town clothes?

There will be those of you who have no idea what I am talking about.

But those that do - if you do, it means you know about house clothes.  When I was a kid, we even had yard clothes.

Recently, driving through town with my daughters and the older one snorted when apparently I made an involuntary intake of breath while driving past someone in paddock clothes in the main drag.

I can’t help it.  I grew up with it.  It is cultural.

Its not that I am what one would call at fashionable or even approaching appropriately attired at all times.

However there are many women in my family that one has to either attempt to meet their standards or adopt a whatever attitude.

And just because I have taken the latter approach – that doesn’t mean that the conditioning still has fair sway in my mind.

See, we were Country growing up – and that means at least a half hour in a car before you get to town – so there are logistics involved, some thought needs to go into the venture – and that includes pulling yourself together a bit.

Not like you Town kids, who you stepped out of your front doors to civilization.

Good Morning Insomnia

and what a wonderful example of 1:45 in the morning this is.

Isn't it such a modern, first-world luxury?  Shame, I should be REVELLING in the ability to be unable to sleep.

Some people are apparently too darned tired to have such problems.  Hmph.  That just shows how ignorant some people are on the underlying cause of insomnia.

Having too many freaking problems.

Sure, they may not be the world-leading problems that should be keeping me awake, granted.

But thinking that I have failed my child - that is one that can be both indefineable and internationally shared - is a great one to worry you into the hours of the morning.

Then I worry that I will not be up and up to par for the day's tasks ahead, and that one is great for weaving into the insomniac narrative.

I can do an awesome number on not following dreams through being too scared.  Or up myself.  Or a bit of both.  Self-flagellation works from whatever angle you try on that lovely little mess.

The sudden memory of a missed bill - or message - or phone call - or task.  Sorting out the miscommunications of the past forty years.  Peering at the next 10 - years, months, days - with trepidation because I might have missed something.

"Don't worry Worry" - were you ever told that as a child?

To my mind, Worry must be a particularly scary fairy, alternatively unkempt and over-dressed, the manifestation of all my worst fears slumbering in the dusty shed of my psyche.

I tipitoe around Worry, so scared to wake it - because this anxiety that I have bouts of - about nothing, everything and whatever in between - is pretty harsh.

Imagine if I made it worse by worrying Worry about it all?

I warm some milk.  Who decided warmed milk was meant to be a cure?  I can imagine that the author of that information must have been rich, for refrigeration options would have to be paramount in the decision to push dairy products.  And then how to warm it?

While warming milk, the cat decides that it is time to demand a bit of attention - and by attention he means food.

He fixes me with that "and don't try to fob me off with that canned crap that is leftover in the fridge" glare.  You would think that this may be a comment on the quality of food available and the class of cat we are talking, but in fact it is just this particular varmint being as indeciferably fussy as possible.  I no longer have a "go to guarantee" with him.  Some days, the cheap stuff is all he will deign to eat, but the moment you lull yourself into a false sense of security, he will decide that no, in fact he is the cat who wants only fresh.  Or high-faluting stuff.

Paris is about to stir to claim her half of our bed.  I just heard the future rustle and my insomnia suddenly is pretending to be tired.

No comment required.

In which Jeanie entered the local council domain - and may not have emerged quite sane...

Over the last week, there has been an increase of council activity in the area.  Large pipes.  Dongas.  Trucks and cranes.  Signs.

In search of what could be the root cause of such, I used my initiative and looked at the council website.  Oh foolish, foolish me.

I like to flatter myself that I have a handle on technology.  I mean, fair enough, I do have my luddite areas - who doesn't- but the basics I think I can grasp.

However when their website, my laptop, the navigational system limitations and my impatience all combined tonight?  The axis of my world tilted - and not in a good way.

Its like the powers that be gave the industry the brief: "Test this site on a laptop and if it a frustrating enough process for people to go stark raving loony give up rather than finding anything at all worthwhile, you are shortlisted".

A tough competition, given the calibre of the resultant outcome.  This website is, no doubt, a masterpiece in its deliverance of mediocrity.

It looks good, but they have crafted a high fashion model. I mean, you hope and believe there is some flicker of intelligence available when interacted with, but the amazingly ugly "fashion" that is draped around them - or in this instance, "drop-down menued" - somehow dances the chance of grasping the grail just out of reach.

Yes, Virginia, there are no Sense of Clues. Nor any way of discovering the answer to the question posed.
Who are those council men and what are they doing across the road from our house?

Local councilor, can you please illuminate to this poor resident on what is going on that would cause so many objects de council - including blokes - to be haunting my street?

And why is it so secretive that a search term "my street" * yields a grand total 0% success rate.

It did come to mind that I might actually be living in the current Roswell.  (Yes folks, that is how much this website affected me.  From perusing the streetscape to high fashion straight to an episode of Twilight Zone.  If only it had taken me to the answer as quickly)

Is it possible that the yellow and black diagonally striped signs are indicating landing zones, and maybe it’s not frogs I hear tunefully singing on moist evenings but intergalactic communication?

I digress - are we getting a highway, local councilor?

It would certain bring the tourists in quicker, but it may cause a headache for the boffins who have steadfastly refused to pave the edges of our road despite escalating costs in caravan-caused edge-degradation.

They would be thrust under a sword of damocles, their potent power over the few witnessed by the many…  What price their pride - and what gain the masses?

Okay, indulge me, maybe its not such a cesspit of petty fiefdoms and political intrigues as I would imagine, this council that my street has become the puppet of.

You, as our elected official may wield your powers with as much gravity as you wish, but can YOU navigate this website?

I think that would take more that the power of the people, local councillor, but magic.  Real magic.

Perhaps it is whimsy that the website will not divulge the secrets.

Perhaps it is personal.

Perhaps the power of the internet really is in big brother’s little brother’s grasp, and some secret agent in a bunker at the local council call centre has zeroed in on our address and declared “NO.  NO, they shall NOT discover what we are doing in there neighbourhood.  Never.  Ever ever ever” screeching the last word so high that several calls are cut of as a result of the interference, and then chuckling evil little secret agent chuckles as he manoeuvres the inadequacies of the website specifically for my experience.

Or not.

So, lets make it up.  What is going on in our street?  If they aren't going to tell us, beggar them.  They can RISE to our expectations based on rumour and gossip.

(NB - no councils were intentionally harmed in the making of this blog post.  The site, on the other hand, has its own issues to deal with.  I ain't going there no more.)

Different Kinds of Fairy Tales and Philosophy

Against all good advice – or, apparently, judgement – I have a history with – well, with texture and drama at certain points – and I won't go into that too much in depth except to say I am unable to honestly tick the box foretold in the fairy-tales, the childhood sweetheart.

I know, brazen, wanton hussy that I am, admitting that OUT LOUD, IN PUBLIC.

But to be frank, once you are past the juncture where you can feasibly attain such an object in your life, the requirement to DREAM about it as an ideal is actually futile…

In fact, to continue to search for the possibility is viewed by polite society to be downright immoral and illegal!

And yet – and yet we keep on pushing the notion, the Prince Charming to sweep you off your feet – a reality that, frankly, very few of us end up cashing our chips in on.

Not that I have anything against those of you who found contentment and delight in the first swain to have troubled your doorstep when said doorstep was still shared with your parents.

However, there are many other possible pathways to take in this silly little world we inhabit for however brief a moment in time, and to disallow other possible pathways as plausible in the dreamscape of childhood is narrow, for there is joy to be found in these other avenues also…

The moment of falling in love – deeply, irrevocably in love – with a background of other spectacular moments of falling into deep, irrevocable love in the past isn’t necessarily a lesser thing to that moment of falling in love for the very first time.

It is a DIFFERENT thing, for sure.

But you see, one is impossible with the other - but not the other way around...

That moment of feeling your heart break in new ways over days or weeks or months of mourning for what was not possible in such a relationship.

That moment of realising that, although your heart breaks in new ways, it is healing and embracing what life has to offer.

That moment of understanding that you can be alone in this world and be okay.

That moment of realising you actually are enjoying complete self-reliance in whatever sphere of your life.

That moment of discovering answered needs for a myriad of things in life from a myriad of people in life that proves being part of a community can be buoyant and uplifting.

(Perhaps not that moment of fear of unwanted attention and ill-conceived borders, but hey, they’re not a given.)

Another – and another – and another moment of falling in love…

Although – although as a married woman now, the most staid (and indeed stayed) I have ever been in my life – there are moments in such a life where you do discover other, new moments of falling in love in such a scenario that I would never have imagined in other phases.

The “oh I never noticed” moments, the "I never noticed that" moments, the “oh that is why” moments, the “ohhhh, THAT is why” moments, the “oh? That’s why?” moments and the “I dunno why” moments.

And I would imagine in the amount of growing and changing that takes place between then and now, there would also be renewed falling in loves for such people who number the childhood sweetheart component of the audience.

You would certainly hope so, at least, because they sure as dodo eggs are a declining market - there is a pretty finite market to begin with, and an attrition rate.  Anything other would be detrimental to their whole survival – we need them around to study!!

Oh - and the fairy tale game would well and truly be up!

Well will you look at that - an obligatory end of year overview, tidings and reso - reso - R - E - S - O - lutions...

2015 was a bizarre year for us.  A lot of life doesn't get blogged about because it is the minutae of getting by.  A lot of life doesn't get blogged about because it is personal.  A lot of life doesn't get blogged because it is boring...

We started the year on the other side of the world and it was strange -

- then we came home January and it was stranger...

February we embarked upon strange new routines... (unblogged was a rather tough go-round in circles of medical hell for another)

March saw us all climb a few mountains (and probably rolled down a few slopes)...

April was another interesting month (and in unbloggable news, V got kneecapped by an expert!)

May and June will forever remain mysterious, as they were completely uninspiring.  They were there.  We got through.

July and the long run downhill at the end of the year began.  I even blogged it.

August?

September?

October and I got along a little better.  Of course, that is all relative...

November started to tune up the "busy" in our lives...

And December - well, it was good all told, but the fact that it was still officially in 2015 was its main drawback.

But - I just saw the fireworks for 2016 - and 2016 is going to be a better year.

None of that pithy little "I don't do resolutions" BS - its reload and get out there territory here!

To achieve this, I am definitely toning up a few things (including muscles).

Attitudes are going to change.  Life is going to be better.   Eat better, sleep better, be more conscious and less anxious.

Try not to sweat the small stuff but maybe break a sweat working on the larger me.

Value time better - and make it matter.

Value friends and family better.

Value me.

Be more present.  Step up (which is different to "volunteer for everything").

Think more.    Thank more.

How is 2016 going to be different for you?

The post in which some reflection occurs...

You know how you do when you sit down to write a post, stuff around, get distracted by the cat, a car, concern for the world - and then you think - well, nothing really.
I thought "I haven't taken any pics of late, and Paris",,, *

So, where was I?  Oh yes, dearth of pictures - and I thought...  Well, no, I didn't.  I accidentally hit the button that turned on my screen camera.  THEN I thought "hmmm, I might shoot a selfie."

I was then vain enough to STAND UP and turn off the kitchen light (because I need the lighting to offer "mystery" rather than "thriller") and sat, arranged myself and click-three-two-one- oh so very sultry.

Yes, one would imagine at this point of this blog, you would see the resultant shot, but bugalugs here then "clicked" on the button that she THOUGHT would ensure that the photograph would magically transmit FROM the machine on which I am operating TO the outside world which is right here inside the machine...

Noooo.

The machine is FAR TOO CANNY for that.  I am unable to locate where the blooming picture is of the above me, but I HAVE found where in tarnation it did send the photograph to.

That is right - forevermore (or the moment I remember how to change it to quaint Windows vistas again) I shall see THIS when I boot up...

I am pretty sure I have mentioned before that my most prolific commenters are those of the spam variety...

But I do have to also tell you, as much as they annoy with there "click me click me click me neediness", they are starting to get to me.

I mean, they are so flattering:

If only they never offered the "click me" and instead offered to entice me with more flattery forevermore.

I could bathe in that for weeks without ever resorting to having to spend for the pleasure...

(okay - the Vicki bit is weird, even I have to admit.  I don't think I want to have Vickis with strong Viking chief heritage to be involved in the flattery of moi...)

I can see my fellow marketing students rolling their eyes at my naivete and try to explain to me that that is how the capitalist system WORKS, stupid, more and more opportunites for extraction of moneys need to be acted upon for profit to continue to multipy for the hungry masses...

But I don't know...

I think I would quite like to live in a world where we all said nice, positive things...

Sure, it doesn't solve ALL the world's problems...

But it does make one tiny corner a little bit more pleasant.

* oh Paris  - suddenly the reality of some of the fear that parts of the world have to deal with far more frequently and far more real-ly than just through the television screen in the quiet voice section of "an in other news" - and it makes me so very, very sad that this is what so many people wake up to, day in and day out, fear of strangers, fear of sudden movement, reality of not seeing those around you every day stay around every day, knowledge that safely is so relative.

If you cnolep, doo

Pretty indepth analysis of my state of mind right now, actually.

I'm dead tired.

Fell asleep at Parisian bedtime, to be frank.  Got woken by a cat who, although surrounded by four humans, feels that the advisement that the feeding of him should be pronto should be shouted only to me.  He can walk past three other humans of this household with nary a glance, come right up to me, give me a swipe and say "sister, food, now!"

Still, I suppose he is only dominating one member of the household with his being a feline-a$$hole to the one member of the household who will put up with such and still feed him.

Hey, it works for the others.

(Said for humorous purposes and in no way reflect 70% of the truth in this household, your honour)

But as I said, completely knackered.

Nearly fell asleep in front of the detective show 'Salina is fond of (and received as her only other gift for her recent 16th.  That is right, a pretty average blog post (that ended up being more about me than her), her license, a cake, dinner out and a DVD of a television show.   We certainly know how to par-tay in Paradise.

(At least her other mother gave her a better blog post)

Still don't know the lay of the land for our detective in romantic turmoil.

Didn't fall asleep in the bath, although whether the fact that the "it" of the particular "whodunnit" 'Salina was watching involved a bath-drowning may have had any sway in that scenario I will never know.

Definitely didn't fall asleep while watching the most excellent episode of The IT Crowd that I inadvertently taped last night.

(I put the full episode on my Facebook Page)

And now - now that there is nothing on and it is the dead of night...

My mind is racing.

Organizing a birthday extravaganza for Paris.  Because I am so good at that.

Realizing I am a pretty poor mother as I did only the above for my Sweet Sixteen. Good for a little bit of self-loathing.

Laugh again at the prospect of women's slacks I get over myself and review the weekend ahead - always a good policy to think of the absolute carpload of triviality my weekend has stuffed itself with...

I have paperwork to find that appears to have misplaced itself.

Really important paperwork.

So turning the house over in panic is on the list.

I need to buy a few things for - well, for life, really.  You know, just socks, knickers, bras (we have well and truly broken the rule of three here - desparate times, lord I need bras), shirts, trousers and shoes.  Could probably do with some fresh earrings also.

Paris has a birthday party to attend nigh on every free weekend day between here and the desert before Christmas that is her own birthday - so there are presents galore to gather.

And don't mention Christmas shopping, because if we both ignore it, I can remain in blissful ignorance that anyone expects any sort of song and dance around that.

And do you know what?  All this rocking in a corner just isn't helping me get to sleep at all.

So I thought, what the heck, offload to the internet and seek the solace of slumber.

Well, either that, or read The Bloggess...

So - how do you get off to sleep when you are whirring...

Public Service Announcement: Something happened...

If ever you want to feel good about yourself, take a brief glance into the Spam folder of the average backwater blog of a recalcitrant writer.

See - there IS good in the world if you look hard enough.

And if you want to feel REALLY good about yourself, please feel free to feel superior to me right now...

(Unless you are my mum.  If you're my mum - thanks - you did an awesome job having me as a daughter, and I really want you to just rest on your laurels and feel you did pretty well so probably would be best if you clicked away now and, you know, not find out that it is possible that I may be an inferior product.  Okay mum?  Love you.  x)

(Oh, and Mum - click Dad away too)

See, a funny thing happened on the way to the blog.

Well, when I say funny, I mean funny in a pah-culiar sort of way, not funny in a rofling sort of way.*

It is Wednesday night here, and Wednesday nights tend to meander along a path towards slumber ** that has slight variation on my Monday and Tuesday versions of that time-period.

Tonight, however - tonight had an added element that could not be strictly ascribed to Wednesday.

As a result, I am sitting here holding an ice-pack that V has thoughtfully given to me.

See?
oops - wrong photo uploaded there!  And no, this isn't the cause of the ice-pack.  Also, fair to say, what went down tonight would have happened had my thigh been either slack or taut.  It wasn't a Wednesday thing and it wasn't a thigh thing...

and I am neither confirming nor denying that some of the above challenges may have been inadvertently involved in the "Wednesday nights tend to meander along a path towards".  I will neither confirm nor deny any butts about what happened.  I can say with assurance that the above challenge was not directly involved in the ice-pack requirement.

Please be assured you that NO PLANKS WERE BROKEN (or attempted) in the journey that became my Wednesday night lament.  Its not about me going crazy, okay?

V is concerned that it doesn't look good for him - but I truly think that on occasion his left arm is his good side...  ***
I am afraid that it is I, and I alone completely responsible for this busted lip...
and I may have both egg on face and egg on forehead, folks.  How superior are you feeling?

Twas I who stood up from a short recline on the bed, sans glasses, turned and walked directly into an open cupboard door.

Yes!  I know!! I truly did walk into a door.  A door that I myself had opened only one half-hour earlier and failed to close properly!!

What a complete fail, eh?  Yes, that voice inside my head that very rarely gets any heed paid is smirking smugly like nobodies business now!

"What do I tell you?  Shut the doors properly.  Close the lids tightly.  Always allow an extra half-hour.  Tidy as you go along."

Blah. blah-blah. blah-blah blah blah.

BANG.

Yep, that is about how it went down folks!!

Now, do you feel better now?

* ever since learning certain initialisms were considered passe by those who are hip and young in this era, I have taken it upon myself to be a thoroughly modern fogey, deliberately choosing such just to get up their left nostrils.  Consider it a Public Service.  You're welcome.

Huge shout-out to the amazing Flight of the Conchords - fourth most popular guitar-based, digi-bongo, acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo from New Zealand.

Bonus points to those who noticed that behind V, I had carefully placed another booby trap should the first cupboard door failed to find its target.

**** and double-bonus points if you noticed that I really backhanded V by linking that song.  Sorry honey.  What I really meant was

(very much not safe for my Mum, my Dad or your Boss)

So.  How's your Wednesday.  And improve mine - how were you superior today?
